Deduction for Unreimbursed Job Expenses - Gone!

Starting for the 2018 tax year, there are no longer miscellaneous itemized deductions.

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act ("TCJA")

This is the first in a series of posts on the changes that the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act ("TCJA") made to the Internal Revenue Code that will affect individuals and small businesses.

Itemized Deductions

For the 2018 tax year, unreimbursed employee expenses can no longer be deducted on your individual income tax return. For example, travel away from home, meals and entertainment, cleaning and laundry.

Miscellaneous expenses also cannot be deducted. These include professional journal or publication expenses, union and professional association dues, professional uniforms and dress, job searches, computers, phones and other equipment used for the employer’s convenience and required as a condition for employment.
